New Holland is an area composed of two man-made islands in the Neva delta, which arose as a result of the fact that in 1719 two canals were dug between the Neva and the Moika River for the needs of shipbuilders: Kryukov and Admiralteisky.

On this calm and cloudy Wednesday of September, without crowds of touristes, we'll walk through this beautiful area of New Holland Island in the very heart of Saint Petersburg. I hope you enjoy!

The legend ascribes the authorship of the modern name to Peter The Great. It was the most appropriate, since initially "Holland" in St. Petersburg was the name of the place near the Admiralty, where the warehouses of the ship's timber were arranged. After the appearance of two channels, the warehouses were moved to the formed island, and the island itself got its name.

Also New Holland is the first military port in Russia, which was founded by order of Peter The Great on September 21, 1721. This island is a unique monument of industrial architecture of early classicism, its area is 7.8 hectares.
