Petersburg National Battlefield is the location of an important civil war battle near the end of the war.
This short video gives a brief history and a tour of the Eastern Front of the battlefield.
Petersburg is an important junction of railroads and roads. Control of it is critical to protection Richmond, the Confederate capital.

The siege of Petersburg lasted from June, 1864 to March of 1865, as the Union soldiers gradually cut off the supply lines of the Confederates.
