The Summer garden

The creation of the garden began in 1704 (only a year after the establishment of St-Petersburg)

The Summer garden became a place for celebrations, festivities, balls, assemblies and fireworks.
The entrance to this garden was prohibited.
It was possible only with a personal invitation of the emperor.

Initially fruits and vegetables were grown in the garden.

Marble sculptures.
There are 92 sculptures in the garden.
At the end of the 18th century there were 250 marble statues!
Unfortunately, most of them were destroyed by the floods of 1777 and 1824.

The Venus Tauride
Roman copy of the ancient Greek goddes Venus.
The Venus was the first woman statue in the garden and it recieved considerable attention.
It survived floods
the Tauride Palace
the Hermitage Museum.

The first half a century the Summer Garden was located quite close to the Neva. Only in 1760 it was decided to build an embankment between the garden and the river.
In 20 years it was decided to build this grille.
Citizens were literally struck by its beauty!

Since 2004, the Summer Garden belongs to the Russian Museum.
In 2012, after a large-scale reconstruction park welcomed its visitors.
